August 31, 1912

Got up early in order to get our
things together. Took a taxi to
the White Star line pier. Got to the
boat about Eleven A.M. Miss
Delaney and Dr. Barbour came
to the boat to say good bye. They
brought us such beautiful roses.
The Oceanic left the wharf at
Twelve. The afternoon was fine
and the water smooth. We
have two large outside cabins
and are very comfortable.
Table board good. Laurie not
felling so very well but I ate
everything I shouldn't for dinner
and enjoyed it very much.
Wore a blue skirt and blue silk waist-
trimmed with white lace and
some of the roses Miss Delaney brought
me. Service good and the
orchestra very fine. Music adds
greatly to the pleasure of dinner.

August 30, 1912

Still tired so just loafed and
went to meals.  Read a little
and wrote some more letters.

...the Collingwood Hotel....

Check out early 20th century New York City and where they stayed before their departure for England......

The Collingwood Hotel, New York City

August 28, 1912

Reached New York between seven
and eight A.M. Took a taxi to
 Collingwood Hotel. Was tired so
as soon as I had breakfast
I went to bed and had a nap.
Annie and the two children
arrived about noon.  They all
looked well and we talked
ourselves tired. Had two rooms
and a bath at the Collingwood
and were very comfortable.

August 27, 1912

Went into Boston with Harvey
when he went to work.  Did a
little shopping. Got the ten twenty
train for Wellesley and had dinner
at Dr. Wiswalls. Had such a good
time seeing everybody. Mrs. Hardwick
came into Boston with me in the
evening and her brother Will C______
met us at the station.  He took us to
the Theatre where we saw "The Million"
played.  I left Boston for New York
on the midnight train so Mr. C. and
Mrs. Hardwick waited and saw me
off. Victoria Cameron came to
the train to say good bye.

(Note: Dr. Wiswall was Edward H. Wiswall MD, superintendent of the Wellesley Nervine, Grove Street, Wellesley, Mass.; opened for patients in 1897. Number of beds, 29. This sanatorium was for the treatment of nervous, alcoholic and mildly insane cases. Supported by pay of patients, per an old entry related to treatment facilities in Massachusetts.  We'll hope that Georgie was having dinner at his home, not at his facility!)

August 26, 1912

Did a little sewing in the morning

In the afternoon went out to
Everett and stayed at Uncle Parkers
for the night.  Went for a walk
in the evening with Harvey.

(Note: Harvey would have been Georgie's first cousin.  His mother, Kate Roy Park, was Jane Roy MacGillivray's sister.)

August 25, 1912

Reached Boston at nine oclock
A.M. Two hours late. It was a
lovely fine morning but we were
so glad to get on land again.
Went out to Roxbury. Victoria
was at work but the house was
open. Shortly after I got there
Miss Virginia Maxwell a cousin
of  Uncle Maxwells came in. We
talked all evening.

(Note: This must have been Uncle William Maxwell who was married to Aunt Harriet Roy, sister of Georgie's mother, Jane Roy.  Georgie must have been staying with Roy relatives, not MacGillivrays or Frasers.)

August 24, 1912

The boat sailed at twelve P.M.
but I knew nothing about it until
the steward came to see what I
wanted for my breakfast. It was a
beautiful fine morning but the
wind was blowing and the Bay of
Fundy was so rough that no one

could get out on deck. All day the
wind blew and the waves washed
over the decks all day.  Several of
the main deck cabins were flooded
and some of the crew seasick. I
stayed in bed all day but was
not seasick.  Enjoyed all my
meals.

(Note: Check out Bay of Fundy here: Bay of Fundy - highest tidal range in the world!)

August 23, 1912

Got up early. Had breakfast,

Hugh and Bessie drove me to the
station. Went as far as Eureka and
stayed at Gilvary Grant for dinner.
Called to see Chris and Julia.
Left Eureka at three thirty.
Enjoyed the trip into Halifax
very much. It was a beautiful
moonlight night and the latter
part of the way the railroad was
near the water all the way. The
scenery was grand. Went to the
boat about nine o'clock got my
cabin and went right to bed!

August 22, 1912

Wrote some letters and went to
the office to mail them.  In
the afternnon went over to Mill -

stream. Stayed for tea and Rachel
took me for a drive.  Called at Mrs.
Sutherlands and Mrs. (I ?) Macdonalds.
Met Mr. Kirken on the road and he
had just been up to Chisholms to
see me. Asked if I would be home
later on and I told him I had to
go up to Hill Cottage and close
up the house so he offered to go
along with me if I would wait a
few minutes for him.  Wilma
and Maggie Campbell were at
Chisholms when I got in. They
teased me about missing Mr.
Kirkens call only I had it back
at them when he called for me
a few minutes later.  Got back
from Hill Cottage about ten dead
tired -

August 21, 1921....again

Georgie must have gotten confused on her dates - this is her second entry for August 21st......

Left Sylvester at seven o'clock and
got to Springville at eight.  Talked
to Chisholms for a while.  Then went
up to Hill Cottage and opened up
the house to air.  In the afternoon
went with Hugh and Bessie to Mrs.
Robert MacLeans funeral.  Came
home and while Bessie was getting
tea I went down to see Christy
Holmes.  After tea I went for a
twenty  mile drive with Hugh.  Got
back to Bridgeville about nine
and got home about ten.  Called
to see Mrs. Ross.

(After her father, Isaac, died, the house was basically closed up and no one else ever lived there.  It was later torn down, according to Annie Laurie in her Recollections of a Canadian Childhood)

August 21, 1912

Same as the day before. In

the evening went for a drive
and then went over to see Wilkie.

(Note: Wilkie is Georgie's cousin, daughter of Aunt Hattie Roy Maxwell, sister of Georgie's mother, Jane Roy MacGillivray.)

August 16, 1912

Spent the day quietly and in
evening went to a party Aunt
Anna gave for me.  Had an
awfully good time.  Wore my
black lace dress and a huge
bouquet of scarlet geraniums.
There was a nice crowd.  Hugh
Calder Isaac Macdonald James
Grant, Hugh Chisholm, Mr.
Kirken, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Grant,
J. Campbell, Wilma Bessie, Jen,
Jessie, May, Clara, and I.
Hugh Chisholm took me home.

August 15, 1912

August 14, 1912

Jen and I went down to
PineTree.  Hugh drove us to the
Station.  Reached Uncle Johns
in time for diner.  Had a
very pleasant little visit.

(Note: This is Uncle John Grant, married to Aunt Anna, sister of Georgie's father.)

August 13, 1912

The day was uneventful.
Jen, Hugh and I got up late
and had breakfast by ourselves.
In the evening Clara Grant
came in when she left for
home we all walked down
with her.

August 11, 1912

We all went to church.  It
was good to be back in Spring-
ville and see all the home people.
Nothing startling happened during
the day.

Springville Presbyterian Church, originally built in 1853 by Rev. Angus MacGillivray, Georgie's grandfather. It still stands today, just north of the site of the MacGillivray homeplace known as Cottage Hill, where Georgie grew up.

August 10, 2012

Just lounged around the
house and talked and in the
evening Jen went as far as
Bridgeville with Hugh for a
drive.  They called at Mrs. Ross'

(Note: This Jen could be a younger sister or a first cousin, Jennie MacGregor)

August 9, 1912

Went out for a drive with Hugh
and on our way home called at
Aunt Anna's and got my suit
case.  Got home in time for
dinner.  At three o'clock Bessie
told me she had written Jen to
come over so we went down where
the train came in.  She looked
well and I was so glad to see
her.
(Note: Bessie was a Chisholm; the Chisholms were closest neighbors to the MacGillivrays)

August 8, 1912

Got up early.  Had breakfast which
I enjoyed very much after my
fast.  Left for home by the Sydney
express.  Enjoyed the trip from
Halifax to Eureka very much.  Uncle
Joe met us and we had dinner
in Millstream.  After dinner Aunt
Anna, Rachel and I called on
Mrs. John Campbell (Wilma Grant).
She was newly married and I had arrived at one of her receiving
days.  Wilma was dressed in her
wedding dress and looked very
nice.  Jessie May, Margaret and
Mrs. Fraser were receiving with her.
We went from there to Mrs. Chisholms.
Aunt Anna and Rachel went
home but I stayed with Bessie.

(Note:  Aunt Anna [Grant] was the sister of Isaac MacGillivray, Georgie's father.  Uncle Joe was her husband.)

August 7, 1912

Was dreadfully sea sick all day
never got out of my cabin.  Was
disgusted with myself as the sea
was quite calm.  Reached Halifax
about six o'clock in the evening.  It
took all my energy to get up and
dress.  Took a carriage from the
wharf to the King Edward Hotel.  Had
a very nice room.  Had hoped to make
a few calls and see a little of the
town but felt so wretched that I
went to bed at once.

(Note:  first opened in 1903, check out  History of the King Edward Hotel )

August 6, 1912

Aunt Sade and I were busy
all the morning and at noon
we left Boston on the SS Perry
 for Halifax.  The afternoon was
beautifully fine.  Miss M. C. Fraser
(a cousin of Jims) from New York was
on board and I enjoyed talking to
her very much.  The sunset was
beautiful on the water.

(Note:  Have just learned it was probably the SS A. W. Perry......)

up to see Gilvary and A. D. Fraser.

August 3, 1912....

Left Wellesley Saturday evening.
Got to Boston at eight o'clock and
went out to Roxbury and stayed
with Aunt Sade for two days.

(Note: Aunt Sade was the sister of Isaac MacGillivray, Georgie's father, and daughter of the Rev. Angus MacGillivray)
